Goldfish Names - Your First Difficult (But Fun!) Decision

by Adam Till

If you've found your way here I suspect congratulations are in order! Did you get a new fish recently? If so, that's fantastic!

Once you've settled them in, and maybe done a couple of rounds of deworming to get rid of the almost inevitable pet store parasites they'll have:

...the next step is to give the little critters a name!

What's in A Goldfish Name?

It seems that there are two kinds of people in the world; ones that give their fish names, and weirdos who don't (kidding!).

Some people name their fishes by colour, and colour-themed names are always popular.

Names drawn from pop culture can be a cute reminder of what was popular at the time (and amusing later on for geriatric fish when nobody has a clue why that name rings a bell).

One of the things that probably attracted you to goldfish in the first place was the fact that you can actually tell them apart and start to learn their personalities, so waiting a bit to name them based off their individual quirks is just fine too.

One thing my wife and I love to do as breeders is to give a theme to our various lines. That way it's a little easier to come up with names for our breeder fish, and they all start to have a little history and story that develops. Examples from our lot are:

  • Thai orandas - names from Polynesia and Samoa (eg. Maui, Sephina)
  • Thai ranchu - names of famous pigs (eg. Wilbur, Snort)
  • Butterfly telescopes - names from Disney (eg. Anna, Pumba)

Whatever you do choose, be sure that you love it, since with the amazing care you're going to give your goldfish you'll probably have them around for a while!

A Goldfish Naming Helping Hand

To give you a bit of inspiration, I've compiled a few lists of names below. You can use the buttons and tabs to narrow down the list as well (say, if you insist on a name from Samoa that starts with "A").

If you want to remove any of the filters, just click on the button at the bottom of any panel.

Optional Filters

While you're welcome to just browse through the lists looking for things that might catch your fancy, these filters might make it easier to narrow down the lists.

If you click on one of the tab names it'll take you to the available filters for that category, then you can click on a button within that category to narrow the name lists.

Not all filters will affect all lists (knowing the "genders" of colors or in languages that we don't speak is challenging, for example), but they'll still help you get a feel for some exciting possibilities!

Goldfish Naming Tips

Don't be afraid to experiment with a name. Something that seems perfect at first may not work in the long run, so don't be tied down.

Naming for color can be fun, but remember that most goldfish will go through a number of color changes over their lifespan. So when your panda butterfly telescope named Po goes white or orange, the name might either remind you of their earlier years or be a candidate for a refresh down the road.

Remember that some names have a way of sticking around, so be careful about nicknames or off-the-cuff comments. You might just end up with a permanent name if you're not careful (though these can be the most fun)!

Looking for a name can be a really enjoyable way to explore the history of a country or culture as well. So if you happen to buy one of our Japanese top view Hayashi ranchu, it might be appropriate to dig through a book of Japanese names for inspiration.

Speaking of which, grabbing a cheap book of baby names from Amazon:

...or at your local book store can be super useful as well, since it can be opportunity to explore the quirkier end of the book (Apple, anyone?).

Have Fun With Naming Your Goldfish

In the end, the best advice I can give is just to have fun with it.

Don't worry about things too much, go with your gut, and enjoy your new addition!

If you think other people might like the name as well, please drop me a line and let me know about it (or add a note in the comments below). I'll add your name to the lists.

Happy goldfish keeping!
